The misdiagnosis of ectopic pregnancy

For Queens couples going through pregnancy, their thoughts are often fixed on their impending arrival and the happiness that it's sure to bring to their lives. In all of this euphoria, it may be easy to forget that even though modern prenatal care has made pregnancy seem relatively easy, a lot can still occur that can endanger not only the life of the baby, but the mother as well. Often, doctors have little to no control over the complications that can occur during pregnancy. However, an inadequate response to these problems can easily necessitate the involvement of Queen's birth injury lawyers.

One such condition is an ectopic pregnancy. This occurs when a fertilized egg fails to proceed through a woman's fallopian tubes into the uterus. In many instances, the egg remains in the tube. In other cases, it can attach to another organ in the abdominal cavity, such as an ovary. According to the Mayo Clinic's website, common symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include lightheadedness and fainting spells, severe abdominal, pelvic, and shoulder pain, and periods of vaginal bleeding. In most cases of ectopic pregnancy, the baby is unable to develop, and the end result is fetal death. If left untreated, the mother may also face life threatening complications.

The website OBGYN.net reports that 1 to 2 percent of all pregnancies are ectopic. Complications from these pregnancies kill an average of 40 American women every year. Over half of the fatalities that come as a result of these pregnancies may be preventable. In these cases, doctors typically failed to recognize the pregnancy or confused it with more common conditions such as appendicitis, salpingitis, or endometriosis.
