The economic impact of cerebral palsy

According to information shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cerebral palsy is the most prevalent disability among children. The parents of those suffering from this condition in New York are often asked to bare an enormous financial burden not only through their kids' childhood and adolescent years, but throughout the rest of their lives, as well. The CDC reports that as of 2003, the lifetime costs of managing and treating the effects of cerebral palsy in just one individual are almost $1 million.

Such economic costs can quickly become overwhelming. Couple those expenses with the time needed to properly care for a child with cerebral palsy, and it's easy to see why so many families dealing with this disease often require extra assistance. Mitigating the impact that this condition can have on a family's finances often depends on setting children up in early intervention programs at a young age.

Study information shared by the site cerebralpalsycosts.com shows that those families that arrange intervention for their children earlier in life often spend less on special education services throughout their first 18 years of life. According to the study, the special education costs for children suffering from cerebral palsy, either as the result of a brain abnormality or birth injury, were $82,000 when intervention began at age 2, as opposed to $111,000 when it began at age 6.

The parents of children who've suffered a cerebral palsy injury are encouraged to look for specified developmental milestones at certain times in their kids' lives to determine the appropriate time to begin intervention. Recognizing any cognitive and developmental deficiencies early may help a child and his or her family to better deal with the condition later in life.
