Doctors, clinic sued by Joan Rivers' family

Every year, countless people in Queens and throughout the rest of the country undergo elective surgical procedures. While these surgeries are often not deemed to be medically necessary, the patients who pay for them expect the same standard of care from their surgeons as they would during emergency surgery. This includes operating within the guidelines of patient consent and having protocols in place to handle any unexpected emergencies. A failure to meet these basic standards could open up elective surgery providers to accusations of negligence.

The economic impact of cerebral palsy

According to information shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cerebral palsy is the most prevalent disability among children. The parents of those suffering from this condition in New York are often asked to bare an enormous financial burden not only through their kids' childhood and adolescent years, but throughout the rest of their lives, as well. The CDC reports that as of 2003, the lifetime costs of managing and treating the effects of cerebral palsy in just one individual are almost $1 million.

Identifying and addressing hospital negligence

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, attempts to increase the safety of hospital patients has saved many lives and significantly cut health care costs. The AHRQ claims that roughly 50,000 fewer hospital patients lost their lives and an estimated $12 billion was saved from 2010 to 2013 as a result of these attempts. Furthermore, the AHRQ reports that the number of hospital-acquired conditions declined by 1.3 million (17 percent) over this period. Unfortunately, far too many hospital patients continue to suffer because of hospital negligence in New York, NY, and around the nation.

How can adverse drug events be prevented?

Every year, an alarming number of people are harmed or lose their lives because of adverse drug events. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there are almost 700,000 emergency room visits each year and 100,000 hospitalizations because of adverse drug events. Sometimes, these events constitute medical malpractice and it is very important for those who have experienced an adverse drug event to stand up for their rights. In New York, NY, far too many people have suffered as a result of this serious problem and more must be done to prevent these incidents from occurring.
