Hospital found guilty of medical negligence after woman dies

When someone files a medical malpractice lawsuit in New York, they may be awarded compensatory damages. These are designed to cover the costs of the plaintiff's injury. In some cases, punitive damages may also be awarded. These are designed to punish the defendant.

The family of a woman who died due to complications after a routine procedure have been awarded $10.8 million in compensatory damages. An attorney for the family stated that they are pleased with the decision. The wife and mother of three underwent a cardiac catheterization at the hospital. According to the plaintiffs' attorney, the tip of the catheter dissected one of the woman's coronary arteries. As a result, the artery failed to work properly and not enough blood was able to make it to her heart.

The hospital denies medical negligence and issued a statement saying the will pursue and appeal. They reportedly stated that the surgical error was rare and it was a difficult situation. An interventional cardiologist testified in front of the 12 person jury that the hospital acted in a reasonable manner in caring for the patient. The plaintiffs' attorney disagreed; he stated that the hospital took too long to take the patient into surgery after complications were discovered.

If you have lost a loved one due to hospital negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, medical bills, funeral expenses, lost wages, and more. For more information on filing a medical malpractice lawsuit, you may want to contact a lawyer.
